The Austin Proper Hotel is a breath of fresh air with a vibrant mix of natural materials and textures and a distinctly bohemian feel. Inside, you’ll find lavish fabrics, unfinished wood, plush leather sofas, and embroidered armchairs, along with stylishly eclectic decor and artwork.
The Austin Proper Hotel & Residences, a new tower with a mix of hotel and residential space, is situated in Austin’s GreenWater District.
The 32-story structure was sculpted to follow the contours of the land and offers views of Lady Bird Lake, the Texas Hill Country, and a reservoir that resembles a river on the Colorado River in Texas.
The project is bordered on its western side by The Shoal Creek, which is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, fishermen, and canoeists and connects to the reservoir via a winding trail.
In order to make room for terraces and pool decks, the tower steps back from the Shoal Creek as it rises.
In order to feel cosy and lively at street level, The Austin Proper Hotel & Residences has been designed with indoor/outdoor restaurant spaces and cafes, accented with metal panels in graphite grey.
The two-story base adapts to the scale of the nearby structures by creating a pedestrian scale along 2nd Street and Nuecess Street. Both the hotel entrance and the residential entrance are framed by a row of 8′′ wooden slats that have been burned in the Japanese “shou-sugi-ban” tradition.
The 244-key hotel greets visitors with a sunken bar and lounge; above, it has ballrooms, meeting rooms, a heated pool, a restaurant by the pool, spa & treatment rooms, and a fitness centre. Penthouses are situated on floors 12 to 33 above the hotel, where 99 private residences are situated on the top six feet.
There is no better place to be to take advantage of everything Austin has to offer while exploring downtown Austin. The Proper is situated in the Second Street District, which is teeming with shops, eateries, and nightlife, not far from Lady Bird Lake and its hike-and-bike trail. Twenty minutes are needed to get to the airport.
Style and Character
Visitors enter a room that has floor to ceiling windows and fresh flower arrangements to welcome them. The centrepiece of the lobby is a massive wooden staircase that resembles a Jenga tower.
Cowhide walls and charming needlepoints coexist alongside contemporary photography, as do vintage floral wallpaper and needlepoints. The juxtaposition of new and old in various design aesthetics creates a warm and inviting environment with a timeless feel.
Service and Facilities
As soon as you enter, you receive prompt and attentive service. The staff members are helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the hotel.
The Proper is the first green hotel in Austin to receive a LEED Gold certification. In addition to having five treatment rooms, the Silene Spa also has a yoga studio, a 24-hour fitness centre with private wellness sessions, and 14,000 square feet of event space. A small-batch tequila bar is also located near the fifth-floor pool. Access to Peloton electric bikes is free for visitors.
The 244 guest rooms continue the indie-boho aesthetic with warm natural materials, distinctive regional artwork, and Kelly Wearstler’s well-known aesthetic.
Along with patchwork rugs and quilts, distressed wood, and cosy damask fabrics, the headboards include Fili D’oro linens, Bellino Italian comforters and pillows, and full-size Aesop bath products.
In spacious bathrooms, features like marble countertops, powerful showerheads, and spacious soaking tubs are typical. Nespresso machines, carefully selected minibars, and floor to ceiling windows with breathtaking city views are included in every room. Motorized shades are also installed in the windows.
Food and Drink
There are four options for on-site dining at Austin’s McGuire Moorman Hospitality, a multiple award-winning company. At the renowned Peacock Mediterranean Grill, visitors can sample dishes from North African, Israeli, and Lebanese cuisines, including tajines, oak-grilled kebabs, and mezze platters. On the rooftop pool deck, La Piscina serves authentic fajitas, fresh raw bar ceviche, and food from Oaxaca that has been wood-fired.
Fresh pastries, shawarma, sandwiches, and other casual takeaway meals with a Mediterranean influence are available at Mockingbird Coffee Shop in addition to coffee, beer, and wine. Goldie’s Sunken Bar, located just off the lobby, provides a cosy and elegant setting for unwinding with creative cocktails.
